Every December is the day when Qualcomm releases its flagship mobile chip for the next year, and this year's debut is Snapdragon's first product after becoming an independent product brand of Qualcomm. Prior to this, the official noticed that the new processor would switch to a new "simplified and consistent" naming system, and its final choice was indeed as rumored in the market. That's right, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is the new generation of high-end chips from Qualcomm that will drive the Android flagship in 2022.

This new SoC integrates Qualcomm's own Snapdragon X65 5G modem chip, and theoretically the peak download speed can reach 10Gbps. In the WiFi part, the new product supports up to WiFi6 / 6E, and the downlink rate can reach up to 3.6Gbps. Compared with the previous Snapdragon 888 Plus, 8 Gen 1 based on the Samsung 4nm process and the ARM V9 architecture (one 3GHz Cortex-X2, three 2.5GHz A710 and four 1.8GHz A510 cores) has increased by 20% in the CPU part. Power consumption is reduced by 30%. The Adreno 730 GPU it uses is 30% faster than the previous generation, while saving power by 25%. In addition, thanks to Qualcomm's seventh-generation AI engine, the AI performance of the new processor has increased by 4 times as much as in the past.

In terms of images, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has a new 18-bit ISP built in, and its data processing capacity is said to be 4,000 times that of the 14-bit solution used by Snapdragon 888. A mobile phone equipped with 8 Gen 1 can shoot up to 3.2 Gigapixel images per second, which means that it can theoretically process 3 channels of 36MP camera data at the same time without delay. According to Qualcomm, 8 Gen 1 also brings 8K HDR 30fps shooting capabilities to mobile phones for the first time. In addition, it also supports 4K 120fps and 720p 960fps video recording. It is worth mentioning that this chip also has the feature of ultra-low power consumption of the camera on standby, which can achieve always-on facial recognition authentication while saving power.

In addition, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also supports aptX Lossless Bluetooth lossless audio technology, which can provide "CD quality 16-bit 44.1kHz lossless audio." It also has a built-in trust management engine (Trust Management Engine), which is the first mobile chip that natively meets the Google Android Ready SE standard, which can more securely implement functions such as digital car keys, IDs, and passports on the device.

If all goes well, products equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will debut as early as the end of 2021, and a large-scale listing will be the first half of 2022. In addition, Qualcomm also took this opportunity to announce that it will cooperate with Google to integrate the latter's neural architecture search platform (Neural Architecture Search) into its own chip. 8 Gen 1 is the first cooperation result. With the support of Google's technology, its automatic AI optimization efficiency can be greatly improved, and the speed of optimizing AI models can be shortened from months to weeks.
