This idea may become possible in the future, because researchers from Minnesota Twin Cities University have successfully made flexible OLED screens using 3D printers (and related materials) only. They used two 3D printing methods to make the six layers needed for the screen. The electrode layer, packaging layer, insulation layer and interconnection layer were printed by extrusion, and the two active layers were sprayed at room temperature.

In fact, some people have tried to create a display panel with 3D printing before, but the result is either that there is a problem of brightness uniformity, or that it is necessary to integrate technologies other than 3D printing (spin coating, thermal evaporation, etc.) to add specific components. At present, the prototype product made by the team of Shuangcheng University is only 64 pixels, 1.5 inches wide (taking the 1080p screen as an example, it will need more than 2 million pixels), and the brightness is not satisfactory, but this method does have potential for development, because it may become the basis for users to make their own display components in the future.

Of course, in addition to the evolution of technology, the cost of 3D printing machine is also a problem that needs to be solved before popularization. The customized scheme used by Shuangcheng University is almost equivalent to a Tesla Model S.
