Glasses fogging is always a annoying thing, especially in recent autumn and winter when the hot air leaked from the mask hits the cold lenses, which is more prone to fogging. ETH Zurich researchers have developed a new technology that can absorb infrared radiation through a nanogold coating, heating the surface of the lens up to 7 degrees Celsius, directly avoiding condensation rather than hydrophobicity to avoid fogging.

The main component of this coating is a gold nanolayer with a thickness of about 10nm, but there is also a titanium dioxide nanolayer sandwiched above and below the gold coating, which not only has a protective effect but also enhances the effect of the gold nanolayer through refraction. Due to the fact that the gold nano layer only acts on the surface of the lens, there is no need to worry about it heating the lens and causing adverse effects in warm weather. ETH pointed out that this layer of nanofilm can be applied using currently mature vapor deposition technology, and there are no technical difficulties. At the same time, the nanolayer actually uses very little gold, so theoretically it should not increase too much cost.

However, although ETH has applied for a patent, there is currently no manufacturer expressing interest in this technology. Fortunately, the same technology can also be applied to vehicles to prevent windshield fogging, and may also be used on glass surfaces that are prone to fogging, such as bathroom mirrors.
